2010…A Season for change!
First off…I would like to thank all of my students across the valley for all of their hard work and dedication to their bowling games. Because of this hard work they have put in it has helped me to be named to the “2010 Bowlers Journal Magazine Top 100 Coaches List”. Something which I am very proud of and very thankful for so thanks to all of my bowlers for all of their hard work this past season!
Now with a new season just beginning, it is important for us to get off on the right foot. Or should I say the “correct” foot. So we need to put an action plan together if we want to see some better scores and results than last year. So here are a few of my favorite things:
I . SET SOME GOALS Goal setting is an integral part of being a successful person or bowler. Whether it be in your personal life, your job, or your bowling game, it is crucial to set goals for yourself and to set out to attain those goals. All of the most successful people in the world set goals for themselves and we as bowlers need to do the same thing.
II. PRACTICE Are we talking about practice? Yes we are and despite what Allen Iverson thinks, “practice” is of the utmost importance and also a crucial part of your success. I can tell you when I was chasing my dream of making the PBA Exempt tour, I practiced almost daily and was doing 6-8 miles per day on the treadmill. It is also VERY important however that you practice the proper things. Simply bowling 20 games a week the wrong way will not make you better. You must work on the proper things and the proper technique so as to develop better “muscle memory” . By practicing the wrong way all you are doing is reinforcing incorrect habits and muscle memory. Get with a USBC Certified Bowling Coach so he or she can show you the proper techniques on how to improve.
III. HAVE FUN Remember the reason you started bowling in the first place probably wasn’t to go pro, or shoot 300….. It was most likely to go have some fun with your friends. So don’t lose sight of that.
IV. SUB IN A LEAGUE A great way to add a little extra practice or experience is to be a sub on a 2nd league. It doiesnt cost anything to do it, you get a chance to meet new people and you can also get the chance to bowl against some better competition than you might find in your regular league. Check at your local AMF Center to get on a sub list today!
Good luck this season. Remember however that if we don’t make any changes to our game we should really expect and different or better results than we have had in the past. Better results require change and practice so get on the lanes!!!
Thank you to all of the people who have been emailing in real questions and ideas for upcoming articles. We always appreciate any and all input as we are always aspiring to help and educate bowlers so they can knock down more pins. As always you may email me at: daveleverage@yahoo.com.
